Executive Vice President for Strategy and Chief Administrative Officer Kelli Murray introduced “Millie,” an AI program that “will eventually serve as a campuswide concierge.” Some Barnard employees expressed concerns about Millie and the College’s approach to AI.

The faculty-led Freedom of Expression Committee presented a 13-page document proposing new procedures for protecting free speech and academic freedom on campus in June 2025. While the document passed overwhelmingly among faculty, the Board of Trustees has not voted on whether to implement it. 

The alternative graduation celebrated members of the Class of 2025 involved in pro-Palestinian activism who faced university disciplinary action or were pursued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Many graduates expressed their disapproval of the College’s administrators and trustees amid disciplinary actions taken against student demonstrations throughout the year.

Protesters occupied the main reading room of Butler Library, declaring it the “Basel Al-Araj Popular University.” At least 70 people were arrested by the NYPD.

Protesters called for financial transparency from the University, and for Columbia to publicly oppose the detention of students by ICE and demand the release of Mahmoud Khalil and Mohsen Mahdawi.
