November 5, 2024

The house lights dim, anticipation rises, and as the first beat echoes through the venue, the crowd erupts — it's the power and energy of live music. From electronic and Americana to psych-punk French rock, this article rounds up my top five picks for this month, each offering good vibes, intimate atmospheres, and the chance to discover something new. This lineup aims to highlight rising artists who have created meaningful projects, strong characters, and great music.

This November, relieve the stress of finals, Thanksgiving chaos, and election season with a night out listening to great live music under $70 and within an hour of campus by subway. As a self-proclaimed lover of all live music who has spent the last three years interning in various facets of the music industry (working and interning for artists including Noah Kahan, ODESZA, Tyler Childers, MUNA, Big Wild, etc.), here are my recommendations for concerts in the city this November.

Shallou – “24, Seasons Tour”

Date: November 7, 2024

Venue: Bowery Ballroom

GA Ticket Price: $41.55

Travel time from campus: 40 minutes

Age restrictions: 18+

Joe Boston, better known as Shallou, is an electronic music producer, singer, and songwriter. His project can be characterized by chill, blissful songs that are best listened to in a national park on a beautiful day. However, not to fear, his live shows are still dancey and fun. While you may not recognize his name, he’s collaborated with many huge pop and electronic stars, including Daya, Elderbrook, Bob Moses, and Ashe, on some of their most popular tracks.

A great song to get a feel for Shallou is Lie, which was co-written by Riah in 2018. Last year, he  opened for Wheathan at Avant Gardner where his mixes were very thoughtful, he had aesthetic visuals, and there was a great energy.

“His music is melodic, fun, and takes you back to the better days of 2018,” shared Sofia Silva (BC ‘25). From personal experience, I can add that Boston is a lovely human being who is very down-to-earth and personable — he is also a big fan of asiago cheese.

Additionally, The Bowery Ballroom is easy to get to from campus and has a lot of great options close by for afterparties or a club scene in the Lower East Side. Even if you do not make it to the show, Shallou’s work is a great addition to any chill study or nature walk playlist.

La Femme – “2024 NORTH AMERICA TOUR”

Date: November 7, 2024

Venue: Terminal 5

GA Ticket Price: $66.78

Travel time from campus: 30 minutes

Age restrictions: 16+

If electronic music is not your scene or you want a quirky, foreign, it-girl show, La Femme at Terminal 5 is for you.

La Femme is a French psych-punk rock band that was founded in 2010. Their song, Elle ne t’aime pas, has been stuck in my head for the last week and I do not speak a word of French. This concert is guaranteed to be loud and cool, with eccentric fashion choices and a crowd that atrociously mispronounces French lyrics.

Hattie Engelke (BC ‘27) discovered La Femme while studying abroad in France during the spring of 2022. “While living there for six months I began hanging out with a group of Americans, and as a group we made friends with some of the local French people and asked for music recommendations,” explained Engelke. “They recommended La Femme, and I’ve been keeping up with them ever since.”

Engelke will be seeing La Femme live for the first time at Terminal 5 and is excited about the experience. “I’m thinking of wearing something sparkly and pink, fun and glitzy — maybe metallic and definitely boots.”

Maeve Daley (BC ‘25), another fan of the group, recalls her own introduction to La Femme: “I first listened to La Femme in a high school French class, but have recently gotten back into them. I mostly listen to La Femme’s 2016 album ‘Mystère,’ which has fun kinda synthetic music and all the songs flow well together.” She also notes that her favorite La Femme songs are Où va le monde and Septembre, adding that “their more recent single from last year Sur la planche is also really fun. Just all around upbeat and fun to listen to!”

Terminal 5 is a great spot to see shows as a Barnard/Columbia student since all you need to do is take the 1 train down to Columbus Circle and make a short walk to the venue. Take advantage of this underground international group while they are in the States!

Date: November 9, 2024

Venue: Webster Hall

Resale Ticket Price: $62.50

Travel time from campus: 30 minutes

Age Restrictions: 16+

For those whose playlists weren't dominated by Sedona in the late 2010s, you may have missed out on the alt/rock Americana magic Houndmouth delivered with this breakout hit.

Nowadays, their sound is soulful and sentimental, which can be heard in their recent cover of Shakey Grave's A Whiter Shade of Pale

This four-piece band hailing from Indiana uses its raw, folksy music to encourage listeners to pause from the relentless demands of the modern, digital era. Their post-COVID 2021 album "Good For You" has all the classic Houndmouth nostalgic sounds with a midwestern charm that feels quintessentially autumnal.

Given their popularity, this show has sold out, and resale prices are higher than the other shows listed in this article. However, American music is arguably a genre best heard live, and Houndmouth's show will definitely get you into the spirit for the Thanksgiving season!

Date: November 12, 2024

Venue: Baby’s All Right

GA Ticket Price: $23.71

Travel time from campus: 50 minutes

Age restrictions: none

If you are looking for a vibey, youthful, and more intimate night possibly accompanied by Mexican food, flowerovlove’s show at Baby’s All Right will be the perfect Tuesday evening.

At 19, the London-based artist flowerovlove — known offstage as Joyce Cisse — is an up-and-coming pop star, runway model, and influencer. She is known for her vibrant, mellow bedroom pop with a celestial nostalgia that embodies her philosophy of growth, love, and empowerment. flowerovlove’s newest song, Breaking News, has a very similar lover-pop vibe to Sabrina Carpenter’s latest album. It is admirable that Cisse has surrounded herself with an all-woman team.

Baby’s All Right is a smaller venue known for hosting artists before they blow up into international stardom, including SZA, Charli XCX, Mac DeMarco, Willow Smith, and Billie Eilish. This performance is an opportunity to experience flowerovlove’s uplifting and playful energy before she blows up into a massive star.

Kasbo – “The Learning of Urgency”

Date: November 16, 2024

Venue: Elsewhere

GA Ticket Price: $46.87

Travel time from campus: 50 minutes

Age restrictions: 21+

The show this November that I cannot recommend enough is Kasbo’s headlining set at Elsewhere. Carl Garsbo, known on stage as Kasbo, is a Swedish DJ and producer whose ethereal, future bass music is a refreshing and beautiful addition to the electronic genre.

The latest chapter in Garsbo’s project was the release of his album, “The Learning of Urgency,” which encourages listeners to slow down, appreciate the finer details, and let go of the relentless drive to accomplish more. My personal favorite off this album is Carry Your Name, co-written with British singer-songwriter PEARL. Not only is his sound full of layered synthy textures, house-driven beats, and introspective lyrics, but the music video for this song, found on YouTube, has the most stunning underwater imagery.

Claire Brown (BC ‘25) says she’s been listening to his album nonstop: “If you’re a sad girl who also loves EDM, then you have to check out Kasbo’s ‘The Learning of Urgency.’ He brings a calming energy to any overactive mind.”

Kasbo’s work has a unique duality — his songs are arguably best listened to laying on the floor, maybe procrastinating or studying while reflecting on life. But, his live sets will have you dancing and losing your voice. Wildly talented and humble, he radiates a thoughtful, kind energy that draws people in and makes his listeners feel like they are a part of something very special.

This set at Elsewhere is Kasbo’s final stop on this leg of “The Learning of Urgency” tour, promising a joyful escape from our busy lives into a night of dancing and being present with friends. Even if you can’t make it to the show, Kasbo’s music is the perfect addition to any playlist for winding down, studying, or taking a reflective pause. But truly, don’t miss this chance — his live performance will be an unforgettable experience!
